Scope and Contents
Rapids on the lower Congo River and site of one of the world's largest hydroelectric-dam projects, in western Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 25 miles (40 km) above the port of Matadi. At a sharp bend in the river between Sikila Island and the mouth of the Bundi River (a Congo River tributary), the Congo falls 315 feet (96 m) in 9 miles (14 km) and flows at a rate of about 1,500,000 cubic feet (43,000 cubic m) per second. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
