Scope and Contents
The photograph depicts sign commemorating a place where Henri Morton Stanley camped on his way to rescue a British garrison under siege at Juba, southern Sudan, by the forces of the Mahdi. During his trip to Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Elisofon visited Bunia and its surroundings, near Lake Albert. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
