Scope and Contents
"While the construction of walls is often undertaken by the owner of the house and men of his immediate family, roof raising and thatching is often a community activity. Thatched roofs are usually constructed so that they overhang the walls. This helps protect the mud-brick walls from rain damage, and create a shady porch." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
