Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts experiment conducted by Dr. W. McDonald, an American entomologist. The Fulbe boy is holding male goats' legs while tsetse flies are feeding on them for research on animal trypanosomiasis. The 20 female flies per boxes are a species of tsetse called Glossina palpalis. They are being bred to provide uninfected flies for disease transmission experiments. [Eliot Elisofon's personal field notes]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
