Scope and Contents
"Because of the size of the country and the poor condition of the roads, air transportation is an important link to parts of Zaire and at times has been used to transport minerals and food. The national Air Zaire (called Air Congo until 1971) provides regular service to 40 airports." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press, Inc.]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
