Scope and Contents
"Zaire's major ocean port, Matadi is lying 200kms up the Zaire River from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the major shipment points for goods travelling by rail to Kinshasa. As such, it is the linchpin of Zaire's internal transportation network. A rail line connects it to Kinshasa, 350km away. A monument to the builders of the Matadi-Kinshasa Railway stands on a nearby hill." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
