Scope and Contents
Patterson's Eland is a large rather cow-like antelope weighing as much as 900 kgs and measuring nearly two meters to the top of the hump. In color the females are reddish-fawn and the males are grey. Both sexes have lateral stripes round the barrel of the body and a conspicuous tuft of dark hair on the dewlap. Both males and females have heavily spiraled or corkscrew horns which grow straight back from the head. Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger) is an antelope that inhabits wooded savannah in East Africa south of Kenya, and in Southern Africa. It stands 120 to 140 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh 200 to 270 kilograms, males being larger than females. Female Sable Antelope are chestnut to dark brown darkening as they mature while males are very distinctively black. Sable Antelope live in wooded savannah where they eat mid-length grass and leaves. The sable antelope was one of the national emblems of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
