Alexandria (Arabic Al-Iskandariyah) lies north-west of the Nile delta and stretches along a narrow land strip between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mariut (Mareotis)." [The J.P.Getty Fund: Thesaurus of Geographic Names]. The photograph depicts Qāʼit Bāy fort (Arabic Qalʻat Qāyitbāy). The Mamluk fort was constructed in 1477. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was working on "The Nile" project and traveled to Africa from March 14, 1961 to March 31, 1961.
