Scope and Contents

Babati district is located along the Arusha-Dodoma road in the Rift Valley, south of Lake Manyara Park and west from Tarangire. This area is widest in the north and narrowing to a sharp point in the south in Mbeya. It is characterized by acacia and baobab trees, dry thorn scrub woodland and has comparatively small highland blocks and mountains. Rainfall per year is less than 800 mm but the highland blocks and mountains occasionally receive good rains. The tsetse species occurring in this area are G. swynnertoni, G. pallidipes, G. morsitans, G. brevipalpis, G. longipennis and G. fuscipes which is confined to near the shores of L. Victoria. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
