Scope and Contents

"The temple itself was begun by Ptolemy VI but most of the decoration was not completed until the time of Ptolemy XII Auletes, and the outermost areas were not built until Roman times. The whole temple reflects its dual ownership, and even the Roman forecourt was 'divided' into equal shares for Sobek and Haroeris. The decoration of the hypostyle hall and remaining parts of the temple is divided between the two gods, with scenes of Sobek on the east and Haroeris on the west. A second hypostyle repeats the design on a smaller scale and again allows two separate processional paths toward the inner sanctuaries behind the three narrow transverse halls or vestibules." [Wilkinson R., 2000: The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
