Scope and Contents

"At Kom Ombo, a new temple was started under Ptolemy VI. The building was conceived as a double temple with two processional axes, one leading to the sanctuary of Haroeris and the other to the sanctuary of Sobek. The 28.5 x 44m building had a double gate in its facade and two side entrances. An ambulatory surrounded the two main sanctuaries. To the front, three broad rooms and a hypostyle hall follow each other. At a later period, the temple of Kom Ombo had been enlarged with a gate and a proanos by Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos, and was again extended under Augustus. The temple was surrounded by a 3 m thick stone enclosure wall, which included a rectangular, colonnaded court at the front of the temple." [Arnold D., 1999: Temples of the Last Pharaohs. Oxford University Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
