Scope and Contents
"On a promontory on the western bank of Lake Nasser and close to the High Dam, several structures saved from Nubian Kalabsha (ancient Talmis) have been reconstructed. They include the Kalabsha Temple with its related Birth House, an earlier rock-hewn memorial chapel known as Beit al-Wali, the Greco-Roman kiosk of Kertassi, and some ancient rock drawings. The temple of Kalabsha, dedicated to the Nubian god Merul (Greek Mandolis), is the largest free-standing temple from Nubia. It was probably started by Thutmose III and added to by his son, Amenhotep II, whose reliefs have survived. The entrance pylon, slightly askew from the axis of the temple, is well preserved. Apart from the sun disc and uraeus depicted above the central doorway, and two gods depicted inside the door jambs, the two towers of the pylon are unadorned." [Kamil Jill, 1993: Aswan and Abu Simbel, History and Guide. The American University in Cairo Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
