Scope and Contents

"Here two great mosques face each other across the narrow rising street; to the left the mosque of Sultan Hasan, and opposite this the mosque of Rifāʹi, built at the turn of the century for the Khedivial family by Herz Bey, architect to the Comité de Conservation. The Madrasa of Sultan Hasan (1356) is an outstanding example of the intellectual quality of Islamic architecture." [Russell D., 1963: Medieval Cairo and the Monasteries of the Wādi Natrūn. Weidenfeld and Nicolson]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
