Scope and Contents

"The rural Mosque of Bougouni probably dates from c. 1890. The building illustrates the practice of using ostrich eggs -symbolic of purity and fertility- both as a decoration and as protection against heavy rain on the most exposed points." [Frishman M. and Khan H.-U., 1994: The Mosque. Thames and London Ltd.]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17,1970.
