Scope and Contents
"The Great Mosque of Mopti was built under French supervision on the island of Komoguel in 1935. The building was inspired by the style of the Djenne mosque, based on the indigenous Manding heritage. Together with the Great Mosque (1909) at Djenne, The Mopti Mosque represents a development of sub-Saharan building that has come to be regarded as the synthesis of local regional design." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for National Geographic and traveled to Africa from January 19, 1972 to mid April 1972.
