Scope and Contents
"The Great Mosque of Mopti was built under French supervision on the island of Komoguel in 1935. The building was inspired by the style of the Djenne mosque, based on the indigenous Manding heritage. Together with the Great Mosque (1909) at Djenne, The Mopti Mosque represents a development of sub-Saharan building that has come to be regarded as the synthesis of local regional design." [Frishman M. and Khan H.-U., 1994: The Mosque. Thames and London Ltd.]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17,1970.
