Scope and Contents
In the 20th Century, rapid population expansion, especially since the 1950s, has caused the city to spread to the north and south along both banks of the nile, and eastwards into the desert. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
