Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts the southern extremity of Zamālik, Jazīrat az Island (Gezirah Island) with 590-foot-high Cairo Tower. The edifice was built in 1957 and is surmounted by a revolving restaurant and a radio and television mast. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
