Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts Sir Steward Gore Browne's mansion on its estate at Ishiba Ngandu. The estate comprised a 33,000 acre citrus farm. During his trip to Nothern Rhodesia (now Zambia), Elisofon visited Shiwa Ngandu (also called Shiwa Ngandu), a grand English country house estate, the life-long project of an English aristocrat, Sir Stewart Gore-Browne. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
