Scope and Contents
During his trip to South Africa, Elisofon visited Cape Town which was founded by navigator Jan van Riebeeck for the Dutch East India Company; controlled by the Dutch until it fell to Great Britain in 1795. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
