Collection Citation

Eliot Elisofon Field Collection, EEPA 1973-001, Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution

Scope and Contents

During his trip to South Africa, Elisofon visited Pietersburg (also called Polokwane), Limpopo, NE South Africa. It is primarily the commercial center for the surrounding agricultural area. Iron and other minerals are mined nearby. Pietersburg was founded in 1884. The city was renamed Polokwane in 1994, but the old name has persisted in popular, and even official, usage. Nearby are Kruger National Park and the Univ. of the North. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
