Scope and Contents

"Formerly Thijsville, Mbanza-Ngungu is the capital of the Cataractes sub-region of Bas-congo. A farming and herding center, it is a major supplier of food to the Kinshasa area." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
