Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts Catholic Mission art school, which was founded in 1950 by Father D'Haenens. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.

Typed index card reads, "S 3 Kba. Kuba. Zaire, Mushenge. Art school, directed by Father Cyprien L. Herbers, a Jesuit from the Netherlands. Students mostly do copies of traditional Kuba sculpture as bookends, crucifixes, vases, etc. in wood and ivory to sell. 11/1970. EE. neg.no. VI-16, 30." The card was written in 1977-79 by Archives staff using source provided by photographer.
