Scope and Contents
"Later, such public buildings had to find room at the periphery of the towns; most Yoruba settlements today are surrounded by a sort of ring of Government and Mission establishments. All this means that, to some degree at least, the palace and market have ceased to be the focus of the town; some of the peripheral growth may also, as Ojo points out, be attributed to the 'Europeans' distaste for the congested centre of a Yoruba town, and consequent desire to build churches, schools, Government offices and residential areas 'in place fairly remote, where an unlimited claim could be made on land, air, peace, and quiet.'." [Lloyd P., Mabogunje A., Awe B., 1967: The City of Ibadan. Cambridge University Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
