Scope and Contents
"At the turn of the twentieth century, the second and third stages of the construction of the Aswan Dam progressively submerged the temples of Philae for the greater part of the year. All that could be seen by visitors to the famed site were the capitals of the kiosk known as 'Pharaoh's Bed' and the tops of the pylons. Then, the building of the High Dam created a reservoir between the two dams which totally submerge the monuments. The tiny granite island of Philae today lies beneath the waters of Lake Nasser. Nonetheless, a UNESCO project carried in the late 1970s saved Its famed temples and reconstructed them on the neighboring island of Agilkai, which in turn has ben renamed Philae." [Kamil Jill, 1993: Aswan and Abu Simbel, History and Guide. The American University in Cairo Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
