Scope and Contents
"By the late eighties, five cement companies were operating in Zaire with a total capacity of 1,1 million tons per year. however, output in the 1980s was less than 50% of capacity because of fuel shortages and the economic recession." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press]. During his trip to Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Elisofon visited CICO, a cement plant in Lukala, Lower Congo which, by 1978, became the Cimenterie Nationale, CIMA. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
