Scope and Contents
"Aswan on the eastern bank of the Nile served the requirements of a trading center. Its name in the ancient Egyptian language was Swn, which means market-place. It suggests that from the early times it was an emporium, a meeting place of cultures where Nubians from the south, nomads of the Eastern Desert, and Egyptians met to trade and barter." [Kamil Jill, 1993: Aswan and Abu Simbel, History and Guide. The American University in Cairo Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
