Scope and Contents
"Every day is market day on the steamer, where gangways overflow with the stuff of commerce. Forest people sell crocodiles, manioc, snapping turtles, woven baskets, and antelope. The salesmen then become shoppers, buying everything from bread, salt, sugar, soap, medicine, and fishhooks to secondhands clothes, plastic shoes, digital watches, and audio tapes." [Capulo R.: Lifeline for a nation - Zaire River. National Geographic, Vol. 180, no. 5, Novemver 1991]. During his trip to Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Elisofon took the Congo River steamer at Kisangani en route to Kinshasa. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Broadcasting Company and traveled to Africa from early December 1966 to early February 1967.
