Scope and Contents

"Yoruba men from Nigeria wear a variety of hats and caps. The Hausa are credited with introducing the 'fulan' form to Nigeria and for its wide dissemination within west Africa. The embroidered patterns that ornament Hausa hats are commonly curvilinear in design and Islamic in inspiration." [Mullen Kreamer C., 1995: Practical Beauty: Headgear for Daily Wear. Crowning Achievements, UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
