Scope and Contents
"On market day in Dogon villages, conversation and commerce occupy the women's time. The women load the goods they want to sell into straw baskets -vegetables, roasted peanuts, pottery, millet beer, and maybe a calabash filled with peanut and millet paste balls. Hoisting the baskets on their heads, they leave for the markets long before the men are ready. Dogon women may keep whatever money they earn from the sale of agricultural products they have grown themselves." [Hollyman S. and Van Beek W., 2001: Dogon, Africa's People of the Cliffs. Harry N Abrams, Inc.]. During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited the Dogon people in the Bandiagara region. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
