Scope and Contents
The photograph depicts Lamidi O. Fakeye's unfinished sculpture which refers to Yoruba warfare in West Africa prior to the arrival of Europeans. Yoruba artists deliberately alter size and other characteristics of their figures for aesthetic and symbolic purposes. These figures are not portrayed naturalistically. For example, the head is larger in proportion to the body than in the human figure. The head is always enlarged in Yoruba sculpture because the Yoruba recognize and honor the head as the most important part of a person's body. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
