Scope and Contents
"In 1948 a Catholic art Center was begun by two fathers at Oye-Ekiti in Yoruba country for Yoruba craftmen to produce objects for Catholic churches, from which developed several smaller workshops. Christian images were combined with neotraditional Yoruba sculptural styles. Lamidi Fakeye became a prominent artist from this experiment, famous for his wood-carved doors." [Ottenberg S., 1997: New Traditions from Nigeria. Smithsonian Institution Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
