Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts Hausa horsemen from Niamey, Niger, participating in a ceremonial pageant. Both horses and riders are protected by quilted armour, padded with the fibre of the silk cotton tree. Such armour was traditionally worn by the heavy cavalry of the great Sudanic African empires. [Spring Ch., 1993: African Arms and Armour. British Museum Press.] This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
