Scope and Contents
"This type of helmet is called Wanyugo and the masquerader's costume Wabele. The mask's main social use is in funeral rites, but it is also active in aggressive witchcraft, which it can either combat or perform." [Bochet G., 1993: Art of Côte d'Ivoire, Barbier -Mueller Museum]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
