Scope and Contents
"On the forehead of each young man, curving back almost to his ears, were six parallel scars, the number customary among the Nuer people. The scars do more than identify tribal loyalties; they also show that the wearer has been initiated to manhood." [Ryle J., Errington S., 1982: Warriors of the White Nile. The Dinka, Time-life books]. During his trip to Sudan, Elisofon visited the Nuer people, near Malakal in the Upper Nile region (now, A`ali an-Nil region). This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
