Scope and Contents

The photograph depicts Katherine Ake Agouabe, daughter of a notable from Ake. She is wearing traditional clothes and gold pendants. "Gold pendants were sometimes worn attached to the hair on festive occasions. This pendant human head is in a style typical of the lagoons region. Akesse Raphael, an Ebrie (now Kyaman) goldsmith, names the design as gobieheme, 'female healer'." [Timothy F. Garrard, 1989: Gold of Africa, Prestel]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for National Geographic and traveled to Africa from January 19, 1972 to mid April 1972.
