Scope and Contents
Tombouctou region was created from the West section of the Gao region; most of area lies in Sahara desert; smaller South area in Niger River Valley produces irrigated crops, including rice & corn; inhabitants in the Sahara include Tuaregs & Moors. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
