Tombouctou region was created from the West section of the Gao region; most of area lies in Sahara desert; smaller South area in Niger River Valley produces irrigated crops, including rice & corn; inhabitants in the Sahara include Tuaregs & Moors. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
