Scope and Contents

"While potters may appear anonymous, individuals or groups of potter can gain regional reputations. The western Kasai region of south-central Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo) and the region near the Lulua River and the Sankuru River are known for the fine terra cotta cooking pots. Potting skills are transferred from generation to generation in different ways. Traditions are past from mother to daughter in areas where there are good clay sources and long-standing traditions of pot making." [Darish P., 1990: Fired Brilliance: Ceramic Vessels from Zaire. University of Missouri-Kansas City Gallery of Art]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
