Scope and Contents
The photograph depicts the main railroad company's marching band. "Five separate railway systems operate in Zaire. The longest, The Chemin de Fer Kinshasa-Dilolo-Lubumbashi (KDL), connects the mining area of southern Shaba Region (now Katanga) to the port of Ilebo on the Kasai River and ultimately to Kinshasa by the Kasai and Zaire River." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for National Geographic and traveled to Africa from January 19, 1972 to mid April 1972.
