Scope and Contents

The festivals of Sallah are celebrated on the two big Muslim holidays, Eid-el-Fitri and Eid-el-kabir, in December and February. At the end of the procession, the durbar begins. Group by group, the men of each district of the Emirate ride up to salute the Emir. After the final district has saluted him, the Emir's armed guards, dressed in chain mail tunics, ride up for the last salute. They ride toward him at full gallop, reining in at the last moment. The men's right hands are raised in the clenched-fist greeting of the Hausa. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
