Scope and Contents
The photograph depicts Ighogho mask dancer performing in front of house at 25 Iwehen Street, belonging to O. Aigouba Rueghian. He is the chief priest of Ighogho, a masked dancer that wards off small pox and other dangerous diseases. During his trip to Nigeria, Elisofon visited Benin City in the Edo region. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
