Scope and Contents

"Among the Bamana, all males receive social and religious instruction. This is accomplished in six stages, each of which increasingly reveals more knowledge about man and the universe. Each stage of instruction has a mask emblem. The first stage is Ndomo. Uncircumcised preteen boys spend five years in Ndomo, advancing through five levels of instruction." [Sieber R., Walker R., 1987: African Art in the Cycle of Life, Smithsonian Institution Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
