Scope and Contents

"Maasai (Masai) women wear more clothing than men, a skirt, one or two shukas (sheets) for the upper body and a cape. Both men and women wear ornaments at the same locations on the body but the female ornament assemblage is larger, more elaborate, more beautiful and more burdensome. Both sexes wear ornaments concentrated on the ears, necks, upper and lower arms and calves." [Klumpp D., 1987: Maasai Art and Society:Age and Sex, Time and Space, Cash and Cattle. U.M.I Dissertation Service]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Broadcasting Company and traveled to Africa from early December 1966 to early February 1967.
