Scope and Contents

"Wide-brimmed basketry hats worn by the Fulani and others in the Sahelian region of West Africa are embellished with leather strips sewn to the brim and crown. Although attributed to Fulani (Fulbe) herdsmen, hats of this type are now made for sale by Fulani and others, and are worn as protective and fashionable headgear by men of many groups." During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited Goundam, the chief town of the picturesque region of Lake Faguibine. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
