Scope and Contents
The photograph depicts Oba Sir Adesoji Tadeniawo Aderemi, Oni of Ife (ruled September 1930 - July 1980). The traditional ruler is the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people. Today, the Oni continues to have great religious authority. During his trip to Nigeria, Elisofon visited Ife, oldest town of Yoruba people who consider it a holy city & the legendary birthplace of mankind. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.
