Scope and Contents
A bend in the lower Congo river allows for construction of dams in stages without diverting the river. The first phase of the complex, called Inga I and containing six turbines was completed in 1972. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for National Geographic and traveled to Africa from January 19, 1972 to mid April 1972.
