Scope and Contents
"Not far from the very old Coptic Quarter of the Hāret Zuweyla is the Hāret Yahūd which has been the Quarter of the Jews since Fātimid times; this is on the site of part of Kafūr's garden. In the early 1980s most of Cairo's Jewish community either emigrated to Israel or moved north to the city's more central districts decades ago." [Russell D., 1963: Medieval Cairo and the Monasteries of the Wādi Natrūn. Weidenfeld and Nicolson]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
