General
CDR copy- FW-ASCH-5RR-5987 consists of very short alternative alternative takes of excerpts of folk tales of Indonesia recited by Harold Courlander; the complete tales were released on FW07102, Folk Tales from Indonesia Told by Harold Courlander, in 1951. The five tales on the record all involve a small mouse deer (chevrotain) by the name of Kantchil, who outwits the larger animals, generally including tigers. (About 10 species of mouse deer are found in tropical Asia. They are neither deer nor mice, but in a family by themselves, although closely related to true deer.) The tales are reminiscent of Brer Rabbit stories.
