General

CDR copy FW-ASCH-7RR-2807 is one of a series of at least six tapes of interviews of Kiowa Indians recorded by Harry Smith in the town of Anadarko, Oklahoma. Although some of his recordings of Kiowa Indians were used on the Folkways album, "The Kiowa Peyote Meeing" (FW04601), the current tape wasn't used and there is no mention of peyote in it. However, the liner notes for that album indicate that Harry originally intended there to be about eight albums and one of them was to be "Litha Chesney's Ballad Boxes." This tape, recorded on 4/3/1964, consists solely of songs - usually older country and/or popular love songs, but a few usually considered folk songs, e.g., Putting on the Style and In the Pines - sung by Litha Chesney. Conversation with Harry Smith takes place throughout. No Indian songs are present. Harry Smith's song list is included.
